The winery have been started in 1977 by the Francoli family, already then famous for their excellent grappas and spirits. They began buying sun-exposed fields in the Novara-hills and planted the first plants of Nebbiolo. Since then it has been growing and today the Francoli family owns about 60 hectares of wineyards in the region, mainly planted with the local grapes. The name of the winery dates from 1990. Torracia means "lousy tower" and comes from the old medieval tower on top of their first fields. Piantavigna simply means the planting of wines which was exactly what the Francoli family did around the old tower. Besides the Francoli main production as one of Italys leading grappa destillers their topwines are the Gattinara DOCG and the Ghemme DOCG. The Ghemme has even recently been awarded with 3 glasses in Gambero Rosso.
