It is said that Barolo was discovered and made by accident. It all started when the Marchese Falletti di Barolo married the young french woman Giulia Colbert. She took initiative to age the wine in oak barrels, but is said to have forgotten some wine, which turned out excellent. Thus the starting of aging Barolo. With her death the Falletti family died out and the winery became Opera Pia Barolo. In the 1890s started working here and managed with the years to buy the lands, the winery and the Barolo Castle.
Today more than 60% of the shares are still owned by the Abbona family. The Marchesi di Barolo is today the biggest landowners in the area and exclusively use grapes of own harvest for their wines. The focus on quality is important and the winery has won unnumbered medals and acknowledgements for their wines. To the history belongs that they have restored 5 of the original barrels still in use. The family's own collection of their wines is said to be the biggest collection of Barolo in the world. 35.000 bottles of which some date back to the mid-1800s.
